Minorities panel chief Iqbal Singh Lalpura objects to eviction of Sikhs living in Latifpura
Mohali, December 15: Chairman, National Commission for Minorities, Iqbal Singh Lalpura has taken a suo moto cognizance of the eviction of Sikhs living in Latifpura, Jalandhar, Punjab, since 1947.
Seeking immediate report from Punjab Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua in this regard, Iqbal Singh Lalpura said they had been evicted without giving any alternate shelter. "They have been inhumanly displaced during the month of 'Poh', which is the month in which sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji were martyred. There are reports that police misbehaved with elderly residents of the area. They should have been provided alternate accommodation before evicting them in this cold month," said the chairman of the National Commission for Minorities.

The commission has sought immediate report from the Punjab Chief Secretary in the matter.
Notably, a number of people have been rendered homeless after the demolition drive at Latifpura. However, the state government has decided to rehabilitate the affected EWS families in Jalandhar.

Their houses were built on public land and the Supreme Court had given a decision in favour of the Jalandhar Improvement Trust.
