Punjab: Sarpanch shot dead in Moga, police suspect personal rivalry
PTC Web Desk: Law and order concerns in Punjab have once again come under the spotlight after the killing of a sarpanch in Moga district. The incident occurred in Bagha Purana area, where unidentified gunmen shot dead the sarpanch of village Patton.
According to preliminary information, Harvinder Singh, popularly known as Happy, was the sarpanch of Patton village. At the time of the incident, he was reportedly standing near a fuel pump on Kotkapura Road in Bagha Purana. During this time, armed men travelling in a Toyota Fortuner allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on him.
Harvinder Singh sustained critical injuries in the attack. Locals immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he died shortly after being admitted.
Initial reports suggest that the attack may be linked to an old personal dispute, although the exact motive is yet to be confirmed. Police officials said investigations are underway to determine the circumstances behind the murder.
The incident has created panic in Bagha Purana and surrounding areas, with residents expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation.
The police have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the attackers. Officials are also examining CCTV footage from nearby locations to identify the suspects.
The SSP stated that initial findings indicate the possibility of personal enmity behind the attack, but investigators are examining all angles before drawing conclusions.
The killing comes just weeks after another sarpanch associated with the Aam Aadmi Party was shot dead during a wedding function. Harbrinder Singh, the sarpanch of Thathian Mahantan village, was attending a wedding ceremony at Sidhu Farm in Sheron village along with his brother German Singh when assailants suddenly opened fire. He died on the spot.
