Virginia becomes 17th US state to include Sikhism in school curriculum

PTC Web Desk:  Virginia has become the 17th state in the United States to include Sikhism in their school curriculum. It comes after Utah and Mississippi also adopted this in its syllabus.

Notably, the Virginia State Board of Education has voted in favour of new history and social science standards of learning, and for the first time ever, Sikhism has been included in the school curriculum.

The new change would help over more than a million students in Virginia to learn about Sikhism and the Sikh community. "After more than two years of engagement alongside the local sangat, this change will help to ensure that Sikhi can be taught in classrooms across the Commonwealth of Virginia," Harman Singh, Senior Education Manager, Sikh Coalition, was reported as saying by a news agency.

Sikh Coalition has been working since March 2021 to include information about Sikhism, Sikh practices, and traditions in schools.

The US-based organisation said it would continue to fight for the Sikh community and also for those groups whose histories should be taught accurately in the school curriculum.
