Delhi High Court grants bail to wrestler Sushil Kumar in Sagar Dhankar murder case

PTC News Desk: Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar in Sagar Dhankar murder case. He was released after providing a Rs 50,000 bond and two sureties of the same amount.

Kumar had approached Delhi High Court in an appeal against the city court's July 2024 order rejecting his bail. Notably he was the main accused in the death of a junior wrestler, 23-year-old Sagar Dhankar, in May 2021.

The two-time Olympic medallist was charged with murder, along with rioting, unlawful assembly and criminal conspiracy following Dhankar succumbing to injuries when he was attacked by Kumar and associates.

Dhankar succumbed to his injuries after sustaining severe injuries following being attacked by Sushil Kumar and his aids in the parking lot of Chhatrasal Stadium, New Delhi, on May 4, 2021 over property dispute.

Sushil Kumar, the main accused in the Sagar Dhankar murder case, has been granted interim bail multiple times. In March 2023, Rohini Court approved a four-day bail on humanitarian grounds, allowing him to perform his father’s last rites. He was released from March 6-9, 2023, upon furnishing a Rs 1 lakh bond along with two sureties.

Later, he was granted bail again from July 23-30, 2023, during which he underwent knee surgery. Following these temporary releases, Kumar surrendered at Delhi’s Tihar Jail in August 2023.
