FIFA World Cup 2026: Messi and Argentina storm into another WC final defeating England

PTC News Desk: England looked set to pull off a famous win. Lionel Messi was kept quiet for most of the match, Thomas Tuchel's tactics worked brilliantly, and Anthony Gordon's second-half goal gave the Three Lions a 1-0 lead, putting them close to their first FIFA World Cup final since 1966.

However, champions know how to bounce back when it matters most. Argentina showed that once again. Instead of scoring himself, Messi controlled the game from deeper areas, while his teammates stepped up to turn the match around. Argentina fought back to claim a 2-1 victory over England in the semi-final in Atlanta on Thursday, July 16. The win sent Lionel Scaloni's side into a second straight World Cup final and kept alive their hopes of becoming the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title.

For over an hour, England frustrated the defending champions. They limited Messi's influence, disrupted Argentina's passing game, and looked ready to end their title defence. But once England became more cautious instead of pushing for another goal, Argentina sensed an opportunity. Staying patient and sticking to their game plan, they gradually took control, with Messi guiding the team from midfield. It was another example of why champions never stop believing they can find a way back.

Very few teams have managed to keep Messi under control on football's biggest stage, but England did exactly that for much of the match.

Tuchel's strategy was clear from the start. Every time Messi dropped into midfield, an England player stayed close to him. Declan Rice protected the defence effectively, Jude Bellingham matched Argentina's energy, and Elliot Anderson's constant pressing denied Messi the freedom he usually enjoys.

Although Argentina had most of the possession, they struggled to create clear chances. Their attacks lacked fluency, Julián Álvarez found little room behind England's defence, and Messi had to drop deeper to get involved in the game.

England, meanwhile, looked dangerous on the counterattack. Morgan Rogers drove forward with purpose, Harry Kane linked up play well, and Anthony Gordon's pace caused constant problems for Argentina's defence.
