Nikhat Zareen becomes two-time World Championship gold medallist

Nikhat Zareen successfully defended her title, defeating Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam 5-0 in the final to earn her second Boxing World Championship title in a row.

Nikhat won the fight unanimously with scores of 28-27, 28-27, 28-27, 29-26, and 28-27 from the five judges.


Nguyen Thi Tam, Nikhat's opponent in the final on Sunday, was a two-time Asian champion and 2018 Asian Games bronze medallist.

Despite moving to the light flyweight section, the Telugu pugilist easily defeated all of her opponents at the World Championships in New Delhi, including African champion Roumaysa Boualam of Algeria, two-time Worlds bronze medallist Chuthamat Raksat of Thailand, and Rio Olympics bronze medallist Ingrit Valencia of Colombia.

Overall, India has three gold medals from this year's championships. On Saturday, Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora won the finals in the 48kg and 81kg weight classes, respectively.

Later today, Lovlina Borgohain will fight in the 75kg division final against Caitlin Parker of Australia. A fourth gold medal would be India's greatest performance in the World Championships since 2006.
