Sukhbir Badal thanks PM Modi for accepting 70-year-old demand of Sikh community by deciding to establish the Kartarpur corridor
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accepting seventy year old demand of the Sikh community to establish a corridor along the international border with Pakistan to allow pilgrims uninterrupted access to Sri Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference here, the SAD president said Sikhs worldwide prayed everyday that they may get an opportunity for ‘darshan’ of gurdwaras in Pakistan from which they had been parted after partition of the country. “Today every Sikhs prayer has been answered”, he said adding the Prime Minister had won the hearts of the community by deciding to establish a state of the art corridor from Dera Baba Nanak to the international border with Pakistan. This will facilitate lakhs of pilgrims who are eager to have ‘darshan’ of Sri Kartarpur Sahib, the final resting place of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji”, he added.
Mr Badal said two major demands of the Sikh community had been fulfilled by the NDA government in the last 48 hours adding the award of death and life imprisonment sentences to two culprits responsible for murdering two Sikhs in the 1984 genocide was also the direct result of the SIT formed by the NDA government in 2015. “The SIT reopened this and all other cases closed by the Congress government and it is because of this that the Sikh community is now hopeful that the butchers of Delhi – Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar – will also face the hangman’s noose”, he added.
Speaking about the various decisions taken in the cabinet meeting along with union food processing industries minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the SAD president said the SAD and the SGPC had been pursuing the case of opening of the Kartarpur corridor since long. He said the Punjab assembly passed a resolution in this regard during SAD-BJP tenure. “It is a matter of pride that the Union government has decided to take up the issue of opening of the corridor with the Pakistan government also to make it a reality”, he added.
The SAD President said it was heartening that Sultanpur Lodhi would be developed as a heritage city incorporating the theme ‘Pind Baba Nanak Da”’ besides upgrading of its railway station and also starting a special train which will travel to all places associated with Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.
Mr Badal said he was confident that appropriate religious activities would be held to propagate the message of universality and brotherhood of the great Guru during the course of the commemorative year. He said it was a matter of pride that the National Implementation Committee (NIC), which was monitoring the entire programme, had also decided to establish a Centre for Inter-Faith Institute Studies at the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar besides an international seminar at Delhi. He said it was heartening that the great Guru’s message was being taken overseas by the government by establishing chairs in the name of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji in the United Kingdom and Canada besides appropriate programmes being held by all embassies worldwide.
Mr Badal said the Sikh Sangat which thronged the Indo-Pak border to catch a glimpse of Sri Kartarpur Sahib would be facilitated with the installation of a high power telescope. He said besides this a commemorative coin and a postage stamp would also be released during the commemorative year. “The National Book Trust is also releasing a book on the occasion which will be printed in every language in India and it will also request UNESCO to print in all world languages”, he added.
