PTC News Desk: A captivating video has been circulating online, featuring an awe-inspiring gingko tree in South Korea. This species is widely prevalent in the country, boasting numerous monumental gingko trees steeped in history and legend. The viral footage showcases a colossal gathering of people around this tree, renowned for its radiant golden appearance and believed to have stood for over 800 years. Designated as a national monument, it stands among South Korea's most frequented attractions.

Named the Wonju Bangye-ri Ginkgo Tree, this majestic specimen boasts an impressive crown that spans an approximate perimeter of 17 meters. Its sprawling branches contribute to its breathtaking visual allure, earning it accolades on social media platforms where users hail it as the "world's most beautiful tree." According to reports by the Korea JoongAng Daily, legends surrounding the tree's origin vary. One narrative suggests its sprouting dates back to the era of the Silla dynasty (57 BC-935 AD). Another legend traces its planting to Crown Prince Maui, son of the last Silla king, who supposedly planted it en route to Mount Kumgang, seeking a hermit's life.

"While lacking written records, experts speculate the tree's age to be around 1,100 years upon meticulous examination of its growth," cited the outlet, quoting author Goh Kyu-hong, a prominent figure renowned for publishing numerous books on trees.

The Korea JoongAng Daily also highlighted that during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), this gingko tree was granted an honorary government title. Scientists, fascinated by gingko trees for decades, have delved into understanding their resilience. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates that even a 600-year-old gingko tree produces copious defensive and immune-supporting chemicals akin to its younger counterparts.

Gingko, classified as a gymnosperm tree indigenous to East Asia, represents the last surviving species in the Ginkgoales order, tracing its roots back over 290 million years. Scientific exploration continues to unveil the secrets behind the endurance and vitality of these remarkable trees.
