Justice Ritu Bahri to be acting Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court

Chandigarh, October 12: Justice Ritu Bahri has assumed the role of the acting Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court as Chief Justice Ravi Shanker Jha is set to retire tomorrow.

Justice Ritu Bahri, born on October 11, 1962, in Jalandhar, hails from a family with a rich legal legacy. Her great-grandfather, the late Karam Chand Bahri, was a renowned civil lawyer in his era. Her grandfather, the late Som Dutt Bahri, also practiced civil law and served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, Punjab, from 1952 to 1957.


Her father, Justice Amrit Lal Bahri, retired as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1994. Justice Bahri's educational journey included attending Carmel Convent School in Chandigarh, followed by her graduation in Economics (Hons) from Government College for Women, Chandigarh, in 1982.

In 1985, she pursued her legal studies at Punjab University, Chandigarh, and was enrolled as an advocate in 1986 with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana. She initiated her legal practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Her commitment and expertise led to her appointment as Assistant Advocate General for Haryana in March 1992. Subsequently, she was promoted to the position of Deputy Advocate General in August 1999 and later Senior Advocate General for Haryana in December 2009.

During her tenure representing Haryana, she handled a diverse range of cases, including those related to service matters, land acquisition, taxation, revenue, labor, and Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) cases. Her dedication and legal acumen culminated in her elevation as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on August 16, 2010.
