In ancient times, there lived a devoted woman named Karva. One day, while her husband was bathing in a river, a crocodile seized his leg, putting his life in grave danger. Karva's husband called out to her for help, pleading with her to save him. Karva, known for her unwavering commitment to dharma (righteousness), possessed great spiritual strength.
Witnessing her husband's life hanging in the balance, Karva fervently prayed to Yamraj, the Lord of Death, seeking his intervention to rescue her beloved spouse. Touched by Karva's devotion and determination, Yamraj granted her a divine audience and asked what she desired. Karva, with unwavering determination, expressed her concern, "My husband's life is threatened by the crocodile. Please bestow the death sentence upon it."
Yamraj replied that the crocodile still had some life left. Undeterred, Karva warned Yamraj that if he did not deliver justice by punishing the crocodile, she would unleash her penance-induced powers to curse him.
Hearing Karva Mata's resolute words, Chitragupta, the celestial scribe and a witness to human deeds, contemplated the situation. He advised Yamraj to summon the crocodile to Yamlok, the realm of the Lord of Death, and grant Karva's husband an extended life. He argued that her devotion and righteousness couldn't be overlooked.
Yamraj, deeply impressed by Karva Mata's unwavering dedication to her husband, acknowledged her role in saving her spouse from peril. He bestowed a boon upon her, declaring that all married women should fast for their husbands on the Chaturthi Tithi (the fourth day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. He promised that this fasting ritual would ensure their husbands' long lives and personally safeguard their marital unions.
