Apple addresses overheating concerns in new iPhones, promises software fixes

PTC Web Desk: In response to recent reports of some users experiencing excessive heat issues with the latest iPhone models, Apple Inc. issued a statement on Saturday attributing the problem to software and third-party app-related bugs. The tech giant assured customers that fixes are in the works.

According to Apple, the warming of the device during the initial setup or when restoring a user's data is caused by increased background activity, resulting from a bug in the latest iOS 17 software. Additionally, certain third-party applications have been found to overload the system, contributing to the overheating problem. These findings align with a recent report by Bloomberg News.

"The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity," Apple explained in its statement. "We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update," the statement added.

Apple is actively collaborating with app developers responsible for causing iPhones to overheat, and fixes for these problematic apps are currently being rolled out. Notably, Instagram, developed by Meta Platforms Inc., Uber Technologies Inc.'s app, and the game Asphalt 9 were mentioned as apps that had led to higher-than-normal device temperatures. Apple reported that Instagram had already taken steps to mitigate the issue with its app on September 27.

The latest iPhone models, including the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, feature a titanium frame – a first for the iPhone – and are equipped with the A17 Pro chip, complete with an enhanced graphics component for improved gaming performance. Some experts had speculated that these hardware changes might be contributing to the overheating issue.

However, Apple firmly denied that the problem stems from the hardware of the iPhone 15 Pro line. Instead, the company claimed that the new design actually enhances heat dissipation compared to previous stainless steel models. Apple also assured users that the forthcoming software fix would not involve throttling the processor in the latest models.

Apple emphasized that the overheating problem is not a safety concern and will not have a long-term impact on iPhone performance. Furthermore, the company stated that the adoption of USB-C charging, a new standard included with the latest models, is not responsible for the overheating issue. However, Apple did acknowledge that the use of large charging adapters, those offering speeds exceeding 20 watts, could temporarily lead to iPhones feeling warmer than usual.

Numerous users have voiced their concerns on social media and reached out to Apple support, reporting that their new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max devices can become excessively hot to the touch. Some users have even shared photographs of thermometers displaying temperatures well above 100°F (38°C).

In response to these concerns, Apple has reassured customers that solutions are on the horizon and that a software update will address the overheating issues, enhancing the overall user experience with these cutting-edge devices.
