The incident occurred when a man was driving from Gudalur, where he and his friends had spent the weekend and were using Google Maps for directions back to Karnataka.
Gudalur, located at the crossroads of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, is a popular tourist destination.

The friends were led through the Police Quarters, which the navigation maps application claimed was the "fastest route" according to Google Maps. This path, however, led them to a steep flight of stairs in a residential neighbourhood.
The man was unable to continue and stopped the vehicle on the stairs to seek assistance.
Residents and police officers came to their aid, assisting the group in moving the SUV back to the main road so that they could return to Karnataka.
