Another Hindu man lynched in Bangladesh as Zia's son returns after 17 years
PTC News Desk: Another Hindu man has been killed in Bangladesh, just days after the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, according to local media reports.
The victim, 29-year-old Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, was beaten to death around 11 pm in Pangsha sub-district of Rajbari, about three-and-a-half hours from Dhaka. Locals told The Daily Star that Samrat allegedly led a criminal gang called “Samrat Bahini,” which was involved in extortion and other illegal activities. After Sheikh Hasina’s removal last year, he had fled the country but recently returned to his native village, Hosendanga.
Police said Samrat was rescued from the mob and taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Assistant Superintendent of Police Debrata Sarkar confirmed that Samrat had at least two criminal cases against him, including a murder charge. One of his associates, Mohammed Selim, was arrested with firearms.
The Bangladesh government stated that initial findings suggest the killing was not communal in nature. Condemning the incident, the government said it does not support mob violence or extrajudicial actions and promised strict legal action against all those involved. Investigations are ongoing.
According to reports, the incident occurred when Samrat and members of his gang allegedly went to a villager’s house late Wednesday night to extort money. When the family raised an alarm, villagers caught Samrat and beat him to death, while the rest of the gang managed to escape.
