Fugitive Mehul Choksi taken down from Interpol database of Red Notices: Report

New Delhi, March 20: The name of fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi is said to have been removed from the Interpol database of Red Notices on the basis of his plea to the Lyon-headquartered agency, reports said.

Choksi is wanted in a Rs 13,000-crore scam in the Punjab National Bank.

The Red Notice is the highest level of an alert issued by Interpol to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

The Interpol Red Notice was issued against Choksi in 2018, nearly ten months after he fled India in January of that year to seek refuge in Antigua and Barbuda, where he had obtained citizenship.

According to sources, Choksi had challenged the CBI's application to issue a Red Notice against him, claiming that the case was the result of a political conspiracy. He had also raised concerns about jail conditions in India, as well as his personal safety and health, they said.

According to sources, the case was heard by a five-member Interpol committee called the Commission for Control of Files, which cleared the RCN (Red Notice) by rejecting his claims.
