Fugitive Nirav Modi loses bid to take extradition fight to UK Supreme Court

London (UK), December 15: The UK Supreme Court denied fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi's plea against extradition to India on Thursday.

Modi lost his bid to take his case against extradition to India on fraud and money laundering charges to the UK Supreme Court.

"The appellant's application for permission to appeal to the Supreme Court is refused," Lord Justice Stuart Smith said.

Nirav Modi, who fled India in 2018 before details of his alleged involvement in large-scale fraud at the Punjab National Bank became public, has alleged that there is a high risk of suicide if he is extradited.

Nirav Modi, in November, submitted an application before the UK High Court for permission to appeal challenging his extradition to India in the UK Supreme Court. However, on Thursday he lost the appeal.

Two weeks after a UK court rejected his appeal against extradition back to India, Nirav Modi reportedly filed an application in the High Court of London asking permission to appeal against his extradition order.

On November 9, Nirav Modi's appeal against his extradition to India was ineffective, and a British court rejected his plea.

Earlier, the High Court of London (United Kingdom) rejected Nirav Modi's appeal following which the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) welcomed the UK High Court's decision.

"India has been vigorously pursuing the extradition of economic fugitives so that they face justice in India. We welcome the decision of the UK High Court. We want to bring him to India as soon as possible," said MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi.
