G20 Summit in Delhi: Spain President Pedro Sánchez to skip the mega event?

G20 Summit in Delhi: All eyes on G20 Summit in Delhi which is scheduled to take place on September 9th and 10th, 2023 and will be joined by representatives of member nations as well as guest nations. 

Several global leaders across the world such as US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and many others leaders is all set to make a grand arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport to attend the G20 summit on September 9 and 10 at Bharat Mandapam. However, there are three world leaders so far who are skipping G20 Summit in Delhi.

Responding to the question that whether Spain President Pedro Sánchez to attend the mega G20 event or not?  

According to the information received, Spain's President Pedro Sánchez on Thursday tested positive for COVID-19 and will skip the G20 Summit scheduled to take place in India. 

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle Sánchez said, "This afternoon I have tested positive for COVID and will not be able to travel to New Delhi for the G20 Summit. I feel fine."

 

Spain at the G20 Summit will be represented by the First Vice President Nadia Calvino and Minister of Economic Affairs and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation, he added. 

Sánchez is the third world leader to have pulled out of the G20 Summit. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are the other two leaders who will not be visiting Delhi. 

Why Xi Jinping to skip G20 Summit? 

The sources stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to skip the G20 Summit to be held in India next week with the matter in India and China have revealed. 

Why Putin to skip G20 Summit?  

The International Criminal Court (ICC) had earlier in March issued an arrest warrant for Putin and another Russian official. The warrant is believed to be one of the first charges against Putin for war crimes in Ukraine, part of a global effort to hold the Russian president and the Russian Federation accountable for atrocities beginning with the full-scale February 2022 invasion.

Meanwhile, the stage is set for the G20 Summit in the national capital at the newly inaugurated Bharat Mandapam. 

This is the first time that the G20 Summit is taking place under India’s presidency. The event will be graced by many global leaders and delegates. 

About G20 Summit in Delhi

The G20 Heads of State and Government Summit in New Delhi will be a culmination of all the G20 processes and meetings held throughout the year among ministers, senior officials, and civil societies. A G20 Leaders’ Declaration will be adopted at the conclusion of the New Delhi Summit, stating Leaders’ commitment towards the priorities discussed and agreed upon during the respective ministerial and working group meetings.

G20 Countries 

The Group of Twenty (G20) comprises 19 countries and the European Union. The 19 countries are - Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States. The invited countries are Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain and UAE. 

The next G20 presidency is going to be taken over by Brazil in 2024, followed by South Africa in 2025.
