'Go back, Indian dog': Indian nurse thrashed, left with broken nose in racial attack in Australia
PTC News Desk: Months after anti-immigration protests spread across Australia, attacks on members of the Indian community are still happening. Recently, a 22-year-old Sikh nurse was badly beaten in a racial attack in Geelong, near Melbourne. The incident took place on Tuesday night at a gym in Corio.
Harmanpreet Singh said that around 11 pm, three men approached him while he was working out at the gym. They started verbally abusing him. When he left the gym, he saw the same men waiting outside. They allegedly called him an “Indian dog” and told him to “go back to where you came from.” One of the men then hit him, slamming his head into his nose, which caused heavy bleeding. Local people helped him and took him to the hospital. He may need surgery.
Speaking to the media, Harmanpreet said he is still deeply shaken by the attack and the racist comments. He said no one wants to hear such abuse, especially when they are simply going about their normal routine.
This was not the first time he had faced racial abuse in Australia, but this attack has affected him mentally. His sister, Khushi Kaur, said the family is very upset. Harmanpreet said he tries to stay strong and ignore such incidents, but it still hurts. He also said he is unsure if he will return to the gym, as he no longer feels safe.
