Turkey-Syria Earthquake: Death toll reaches 2,300; rescue operations underway
After a devastating earthquake ripped through Turkey and Syria, leaving destruction and debris on both sides of the border, rescuers are racing to pull survivors from beneath the rubble. The death toll has reached over 2,300.
According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency, at least 1,498 people have died and thousands have been injured.
At least 820 people have died in neighbouring Syria. According to Syria's state news agency, SANA, 430 people have died in government-controlled areas, primarily in Aleppo, Hama, Latakia, and Tartus.
The "White Helmets" organisation, officially known as the Syria Civil Defense, reported 390 deaths in opposition-held areas.
Meanwhile, two more earthquakes hit the already-devastated Turkey on Monday evening.
An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 rocked central Turkey, according to the USGS. While a second 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck southeast Turkey Monday afternoon.
