US: 19 killed, thousands face power outages as storm hits flooded California

California (US), January 15: As the storm in California continues to wreak havoc, it has already claimed 19 lives and left up to 400,000 people without power at some point during the downpour, according to The Hill.

Heavy rains in California have resulted in more than a dozen deaths and widespread destruction; however, meteorologists predict that the wet weather will continue for several days. According to The Hill, California has received a lot of rain and snow in the last few weeks, causing power outages and forcing people to evacuate or shelter in place.

The New York Times reported that thousands of California residents were told to leave their homes after heavy rains caused flooding in various parts of the state. Storms have ravaged the state over the last 11 days, flooding towns from north to south and unloading snow on inland mountains.

According to simulations using a high-resolution global climate model, a warming climate will increase the number of tropical cyclones and their intensity in the North Atlantic, potentially resulting in more and stronger hurricanes.

"Unfortunately, it's not great news for people living in coastal regions," said Christina Patricola, an Iowa State University assistant professor of geological and atmospheric sciences, an affiliate of the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California.

"Atlantic hurricane seasons will become even more active in the future, and hurricanes will be even more intense."

During inactive North Atlantic hurricane seasons, the projected number of tropical cyclones could increase by 34%.
