PTC Web Desk: In an effort to resolve the ongoing dispute over the Panjab University (PU) Senate elections, a meeting was held today between university authorities and student representatives. The meeting was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Renu Vig.

According to students, the discussion took place in a positive atmosphere but ended without any concrete outcome. The PU administration assured students that the election schedule has been finalised and sent to the Vice-President for approval. The university added that the official election notification would be released soon.

However, students maintained that their protest would continue until the notification for the Senate elections is officially issued. Two members of the Central Government were also present during the meeting.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) leader Joginder Singh Ugrahan visited the university with his delegation, criticising the centralisation of PU’s administration. He stated that Panjab University belongs to the people of Punjab and provides affordable education to its students.

The 'Panjab University Bachao Morcha' has demanded a written assurance from the university administration. Earlier this year, PU had imposed an affidavit requirement for admissions, triggering student protests. Later, on October 28, the Central Government issued a notification to dissolve the Senate and Syndicate. Although the university withdrew the affidavit condition, the agitation for revoking the Senate-Syndicate dissolution notification continued.

Following this, the Central Government has now withdrawn its earlier notification dissolving the Senate and Syndicate. On November 8, Vice-Chancellor Prof Renu Vig stated that a proposal to conduct Senate elections has already been sent to the Vice-President and that the election date will be announced once approval is received. Despite this assurance, students insist that their agitation will continue until the official election date is declared.
