The Tarn Taran bypoll is widely viewed as a litmus test for the Bhagwant Mann–led AAP government in Punjab, with the party making an aggressive push to retain the seat.
This by-election is considered a key political battle ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The result is expected to offer insight into voter sentiment toward the AAP government’s policies and programmes in this border constituency.

PTC Web Desk: The counting of votes for the Tarn Taran Assembly constituency (021-Tarn Taran) bypoll, held on November 11, is currently underway at International College of Nursing, Piddi, Tarn Taran. The counting process began at 8 am under strict security arrangements.
According to Returning Officer Gurmeet Singh, a total of 15 candidates contested the by-election, while the NOTA (None of the Above) option was placed at number 16 on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). Two separate halls have been set up for the counting — one for EVM votes and another for postal ballots.
The EVM vote counting is being carried out across 14 counters, while postal ballots are being counted at 7 designated tables. Each counting table has a team of three staff members — a micro observer, a counting supervisor, and a counting assistant.
Candidates’ counting agents are also present during the process to ensure transparency. Gurmeet Singh confirmed that a total of 16 rounds of counting will take place.
Tight security measures have been put in place both inside and outside the counting centre. The entire counting process is being conducted under the supervision of official observers to maintain full transparency.
The key contestants are Sukhwinder Kaur (Shiromani Akali Dal), Harjit Singh Sandhu (BJP), Harmeet Singh Sandhu (AAP) and Karanbir Singh (Congress). Additionally, Mandeep Singh of Waris Punjab De is also expected to play a crucial role and may cause a surprise in the final results.
The Tarn Taran Assembly seat fell vacant following the demise of sitting MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal. The results of this by-election are expected to indicate the political mood in Punjab ahead of the next Assembly elections.
