PTC Web Desk: A Pune businessman sparked a kidnapping investigation after he suddenly went missing from Mumbai airport. His worried wife approached the police, but the case took an unexpected turn when the businessman later turned up at a police station and admitted that he had made up the entire immigration story.

The 46-year-old businessman, who runs a laundry business, had reportedly planned to travel to Kuala Lumpur on September 14. The police said he was travelling with a woman friend, although he had told his wife that the trip was for business.

The plan reportedly fell apart at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport when immigration officials stopped the woman. The police said she was carrying an old passport that she had earlier reported as lost.

With the trip cancelled and the possibility of his wife finding out about the woman, the businessman allegedly decided to create a different story.

Told wife he was caught in an immigration issue

According to the police, the businessman switched off his mobile phone after leaving the airport with the woman. Before leaving, however, he reportedly called his wife from a landline and told her that he had been caught up in an immigration-related issue and had to surrender his phone.

The following day, he briefly spoke to her over a WhatsApp video call and repeated the same explanation, the police said.

When his phone later became unreachable, his wife became concerned and approached the police on Wednesday.

Based on her complaint, the police registered a kidnapping FIR and began looking into his whereabouts.

Businessman walks into police station

The mystery did not last long. On Wednesday night, the businessman reached Sahar police station after learning that a kidnapping case had been registered. During questioning, he reportedly admitted that the immigration story was fabricated.

The police said the businessman had not been kidnapped and had gone away on his own.

Police to seek closure of case

A police official said the investigation will now be closed through a C Summary report, which is expected to be submitted before the court within two weeks.

A C Summary is used in cases where the complaint is based on a genuine mistake of fact or where the allegations are found to be neither completely true nor completely false.

What began as a suspected kidnapping case thus turned into an unusual episode involving a cancelled international trip, a fabricated immigration story and a worried wife who alerted the police.
