World’s largest community kitchen Golden Temple to pay Rs 2 crore GST on langar items: The Golden Temple faces an extra financial burden of Rs 2 crore with the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST).

The tax has been imposed on the purchases for Langar (community kitchen) items for the Sri Ram Ramdas Langar Hall.

Sri Harmandir Sahib is known as the world’s largest community kitchen — feeding freshly cooked food to an estimated 50,000 devotees on weekdays and over 1,00,000 on weekends and festivals.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) that manages the holiest shrine of the Sikhs had earlier approached the GST Council and Union finance minister Arun Jaitley seeking exemption from the new tax regime.
