Cong MP Deepender Hooda moves notice in RS over Punjab's resolution on Chandigarh
New Delhi, April 4: Entering the tug of war between Aam Adami Party (AAP) and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) over the statehood issue of Chandigarh, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Singh Hooda moved a notice under Rule 267 to discuss the issue of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. On Monday the Congress MP called the Punjab Assembly's resolution "unconstitutional" and "misleading". Hooda in his notice stated that "...to discuss the extraordinary situation that has arisen in the last few days concerning the Union Territory of Chandigarh. On April 1, 2022, a resolution has been unilaterally passed in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha regarding the transfer of UT of Chandigarh. The said resolutions states 'Chandigarh city was created as the Capital of Punjab' is misleading and incomplete submission of facts." Hooda further added that it is a gross violation of the Punjab Reorganisation Act 1966, and is likely to disrupt the peace, harmony and stability in the entire region. The matter is of grave concern and requires immediate attention," Hooda added. Notably, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann moved a resolution in the assembly on April 1 seeking the transfer of Chandigarh to the state. The resolution was moved against Union Home Minister Amit Shah's decision to put Chandigarh under central service rule. While reading the resolution, Bhagwant Mann stated that this decision is a direct attack on Punjab's right to Chandigarh. Mann delivered the decision at a one-day special assembly session in Punjab's Chandigarh. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on March 27 that the service conditions of Chandigarh government employees will now be aligned with those of the Central Civil Services.
