Punjab Governor Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria today submitted a detailed report on the flood situation in five districts of Punjab—Amritsar, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran and Ferozepur—to the Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Sh. Shivraj Singh Chauhan at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar.
After visiting all the five flood-affected districts from 1st to 4th September, 2025, the Governor apprised the Union Minister about the ground realities in these areas, highlighting the extensive damage caused to life, property, crops, and infrastructure due to floods. He also briefed him about the ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures being carried out jointly by the Punjab Government, District Administration, Army, NDRF, and other agencies.
Union Agriculture Minister Sh. Shivraj Singh Chauhan is on a tour of Punjab to meet the flood-affected people and assess their immediate requirements. He assured full support from the Union Government in providing necessary assistance to the State for speedy relief and rehabilitation measures.
A 35-year-old farmer on Thursday died of heart attack after he suffered heavy losses due to crop damage after torrential rains. The deceased farmer has been identified as Sandeep Singh resident of Balagan village.

Punjab is battling the worst floods in decades with all the 23 districts reeling under the crisis. Over 15 thousand villages have been severely affected with 30 lives lost in the tragedy and the toll is likely to rise.

In a tragic incident, an elderly couple was killed after a roof of the house collapsed due to heavy rainfall in Barnala. While their 12-year-old grandson was critically injured and is currently undergoing treatment. The deceased couple has been identified as Karnail Singh , 65 and Ninder Kaur, 60.
Civil and police administration officials reached the spot and initiated the investigation. The victim's family has demanded compensation from the government.

The Panchkula administration has announced the closure of all schools on Wednesday due to heavy rains.
Crops on around 1,450 acres in 16 village have been affected after water entered the fields falling alongside the Ghaggar, said Deputy Commissioner Preet Yadav.
The District Administration, SAS Nagar (Mohali), advises residents to remain cautious along the banks of Ghaggar and Sukhna Choe as the water level is rising. The situation is under constant monitoring.
The Chandigarh administration has opened Sukhna Lake floodgates for record ninth time this season on Wednesday morning after the water level of the lake crossed the danger mark of 1,163 feet.
The district administration has begun evacuating residents from several Bela villages as the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) is set to release 75,000 cusecs of water into the Sutlej due to high inflows into the Bhakra Dam.

The Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS and PRTC contract workers’ union has announced that all contractual employees will contribute one day’s salary to support people affected by floods in the state. Union leaders, including president Resham Singh Gill and general secretary Shamsher Singh Dhillon, said while they continued their struggle against the government’s “anti-worker policies,” they stand firmly with the public in this crisis. Relief measures are already underway, with ration and drinking water being distributed in affected areas. On Tuesday, three truckloads of essential supplies from Budhlada depot were delivered to Ferozepur flood victims.
A large breach occurred in the Bhakra Canal near Gurdwara Shri Bunga Sahib, close to Kiratpur Sahib, after the adjoining embankment road collapsed into the canal, creating a significant opening.
Fortunately, the breach developed on the side facing agricultural fields. Officials said if it had occurred on the opposite side, the damage could have been far more severe. The affected embankment road is an important route that connects several villages in the area.
Villagers said the embankment began sinking early in the morning, after which they immediately informed the canal department and local administration. Officials inspected the site in the morning, but as the day progressed, the breach widened.
In response, local residents began filling the gap with tractor-trolleys of soil, while awaiting further instructions from the administration. Authorities have indicated that sandbags will be used to seal the breach.
Although the morning rainfall has subsided, villagers remain concerned that if urgent repairs are not carried out, the breach could expand further, putting nearby areas at risk.

The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has decided to increase the opening of the Bhakra Dam floodgates from four feet to seven feet as continuous rainfall has created alarming conditions in the region.
The water level in the Gobind Sagar reservoir is rising steadily, prompting the authorities to take precautionary measures. With the dam gates opened wider, the excess inflow is expected to be released into the Sutlej River via the Nangal Dam.
Meanwhile, around 10,000 cusecs of water is being released into the Anandpur Hydel Channel.
A crack has developed on one side of the Ghaggar river embankment near Makror Sahib in Sangrur. An announcement regarding the situation was made from the local gurdwara Sahib.
Residents recalled that last year the same spot had suffered a 150-foot breach, which was temporarily repaired using sandy soil. Villagers expressed concern that such soil is weak and may slide downwards at any time.
They warned that if the authorities fail to take timely action, the area could suffer major damage once again.
SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal today announced that the party’s flood relief centre in Jalandhar has started functioning as the nodal point for distributing aid to flood-affected areas across Punjab.
The relief centre has been set up at Harinder Farms, where people seeking assistance can contact staff at 81958-22222 or 95012-87100. Sukhbir Singh Badal urged the Akali cadre and Punjabis at large to generously donate relief material, which can be coordinated directly through the centre. He also acknowledged Muktsar district unit, led by Kanwarjit Singh Barkandi, for contributing Rs 11 lakh towards relief measures.
Expressing gratitude to the Shiromani committee, Sukhbir Singh Badal lauded its efforts in establishing medical camps in flood-hit areas, to be staffed by Guru Ramdas Medical University, Amritsar.
The Weather Department has revealed that, so far, the Punjab Government has held only one meeting with them regarding the ongoing crisis. Currently, nine districts in Punjab remain under red alert, with the monsoon expected to continue until September 20. According to the department, the heaviest rainfall was recorded in 1988, and this year’s situation is nearly comparable to that. Officials added that Punjab suffers more damage not from local rainfall but from the excess water released by neighbouring states.

Punjabi singer Pammi Bhai has come forward to support people affected by floods in Punjab. He visited the SGPC office to coordinate the distribution of relief medicines. Pammi Bai has donated medicines worth around Rs 2 lakh for the victims.
Meanwhile, due to the ongoing flood situation in Punjab, the release of the upcoming Punjabi film "Chak 35" has been postponed.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann visited flood affected areas in Ferozepur and took stock of the damages caused by torrential rains. He said that Punjab has always stood with the country during crisis and now when Punjab is going through difficult times, we expect that the country will also stand with Punjab.

In view of the massive damages caused by floods in Punjab, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee has announced that its employees will donate their one day salaries for relief operations for flood affected victims.
"Whenever natural calamities struck Punjab, Shiromani Committee has led the rescue and relief operation at the forefront. Like every time, the employees donate their one day salaries to the people severely affected by the floods," said Pratap Singh, Secretary, SGPC.
Indian hockey team player Rupinderpal Singh, who is now posted as Assistant Commissioner in Gurdaspur, has swung into action to extend help for flood affected victims. Relief material is being delivered to the affected areas and every possible help is being provided to rescued individuals.

The Haryana government has extended financial assistance for the flood-affected Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. A sum of Rs 5 crore for each state has been designated from Chief Minister Relief Fund that will help in relief and rescue operations.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has assured that the assistance will provided in future as well if needed.
Kalgidhar Trust- Badu Sahib has initiated relief campaigns in flood affected areas for the victims. The teams have rescued thousands of people stranded and shifted them safer shelters. The trust has also assured every possible help in rebuilding the ravaged housed, and taking care of education of the children.
Former Union Minister and Member of Parliament from Bathinda Harsimrat Kaur Badal distributed ration and flood relief items for the victims. Shiromani Akali Dal has also issued multiple helpline numbers for flood victims.
Harsimrat Kaur Badal has also urged the people to come forward and extent whatever possible help for the flood victims.


A massive road sliding was reported at Jalandhar-Amritsar National Highway severely affecting the nearby areas. As many as 50 slums were submerged in rain water. The people were rescued and shifted to safer places. Baba Bakala SDM and MLA reached the spot and assess the damages caused by landslide.
The water level continues to rise in Bhakra and Nangal dams.

In a tragic turn of events, a roof of a home collapsed in Sathial village in Amritsar district, killing an 11-year-old girl and injuring three other family members. The injured were immediately rushed to civil hospital, Baba Bakal where they are currently undergoing treatment. The incident unfolded due to heavy rainfall for over 48 hours.
The IMD has issued an alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts including Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Pathankot.
The district administration has directed to shut all dyeing units in industrial areas along Bahadur Ke Road, Tajpur Road, Moti Nagar, and other zones due to backflow from the Sutlej River affecting operations at the Bhattian Sewage Treatment Plant.
Sutlej, Beas and Ravi river are overflowing due to incessant rainfall in Himachal Pradesh. In some places, the Ravi has swelled to more than ten times its width, submerging houses, vast stretches of cropland, and displacing thousands of families.
Bhakra dam: The water level has risen rapidly in the last 24 hours, increasing by 2.40 feet. On Monday morning, the water level reached 1675.08 feet, just 5 feet below the maximum limit of 1680 feet.
Pong dam: The maximum level of the dam is 1390 feet. Last week, the water level had risen to 1394 feet. However, on Monday the water level dropped slightly to 1390.36 feet.
Ranjit Sagar dam: The water level had crossed the danger mark and the condition remain critical with water overflowing.
NDRF, Army, BSF and district authorities have so far rescued 14,936 people from inundated areas. Drones are being deployed to deliver water, milk powder and dry rations to villages cut off due to flooding in Ajnala.
Punjab governor during his visit to flood affected areas, held a meeting with top administrative to review the situation and assess the damages caused by torrential rains.
He also took stock of the relief operations arrangements made for rehabilitation of affected families, and directed officials to ensure timely assistance and effective coordination in all flood-affected areas of the district.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote on X that the scale of devastation required the government to work in "mission mode". He urged that farmers, labourers, livestock owners and ordinary citizens receive "immediate and effective assistance".

Several collapses were reported in the Nangal Bhakra feeder canal (which goes to Rajasthan and Haryana) in the Sri Anandpur Sahib area of Rupnagar district. The damages triggered panic amongst the residents prompting administration to swing into action.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday evening spoke to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann soon after landing in New Delhi to take stock of the worsening flood situation in the state.
Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Agrawal has issued a warning regarding potential flooding in Jalandhar following the release of over 1 lakh cusecs of water into the Sutlej from the Ropar flood gate. The water level at Phillaur is expected to rise to 1.5 lakh cusecs by Tuesday morning, potentially creating flood-like conditions from Phillaur to Shahkot and Lohia.
The DC has ordered residents near the riverbanks to move to safer areas. He stated that if the water flows smoothly downstream, the situation may remain under control, but any overflow from the river could worsen conditions.
Teams from the DC office, police, SDRF, and NDRF have been placed on standby. Nearby officials have also been alerted, and announcements have been made to evacuate areas near gurdwaras and temples along the riverbanks.
Red alert has been declared for Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Kapurthala for today and tomorrow. Orange alert has been issued for northern districts, while the rest of the state remains under yellow alert.
In New Puneet Nagar, Lane No. 4, Ludhiana, the roof of a house collapsed due to heavy rainfall, killing 8-year-old Vikas. Following the collapse, electricity spread throughout the house. The police disconnected the power before recovering the child’s body.
At Sangowal village, Ludhiana, two brothers lost their lives after being electrocuted at home due to rainwater. The younger brother was first struck by the current, and the elder brother was electrocuted while trying to save him. The deceased have been identified as Tejwant Singh (21) and Manjot Singh (19).
Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Monday departed by road for Ferozepur to begin his visit to the flood-affected districts of Punjab.
As per the tour programme, the Governor will visit the flood ravaged areas of Ferozepur and Tarn Taran on September 2, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Pathankot on September 3, and Hoshiarpur and Sri Anandpur Sahib on September 4.
During the visit, the Punjab Governor would meet the affected people and take stock of the ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures in the respective districts.
In the past 24 hours, the situation has shifted. Water levels in the Pong Dam have receded, but concern is now mounting over the Bhakra Dam. For the first time in a long period, water discharge from Pong has dropped below one lakh cusecs. Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, the water level in Bhakra Dam has risen by three feet. The flow in the Sutlej has increased by 3,000 cusecs, while the Beas is currently carrying 2,12,627 cusecs of water.
Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake has been continuously releasing water into the Ghaggar river, prompting the authorities to issue an alert in Patiala. Patiala Deputy Commissioner Dr Preeti Yadav has cautioned that the Ghaggar, Ghagri, and Markanda rivers are in spate. She appealed to the public to stay away from kutcha roads, bridges, and riverbanks, and to avoid unnecessary travel.
Meanwhile, in Zirakpur, the Ghaggar river water has started flowing above the Mubarakpur causeway, leading to suspension of movement in the area. Due to the overflow, nearby shanties have been submerged.
Punjabi singer and actor Ammy Virk has expressed deep concern over the devastation caused by floods in Punjab. Sharing his emotions on social media, he wrote: “Nanak Naam Chardi Kala, Tere Bhaane Sarbat Da Bhala.”
Ammy Virk said it was heartbreaking to see people losing their homes. As part of his relief efforts, he announced that he is adopting 200 homes to support families who have lost everything.
He added that this initiative is not just about providing shelter, but about restoring hope, dignity, and the strength to begin again. Urging collective support, he appealed: “Let us all come together and help those in need in every possible way.”

Rainwater accumulation at Jalandhar railway station led to a short circuit, resulting in the death of a railway employee. The incident occurred while the employee was on duty, when he suddenly suffered an electric shock. The deceased has been identified as Purushottam Kumar, a resident of Bias village, who had been working with the Railways for the past 23 years.
An 80-year-old dilapidated building collapsed in Kapurthala, leading to a power outage in the surrounding area. Several vehicles parked nearby were also damaged in the incident. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The collapse occurred after heavy rainfall late at night, which caused significant damage in Kapurthala. The incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed near the site.
Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has adopted 10 flood-affected villages in Gurdaspur and Amritsar through his Saanjh Foundation. The foundation has outlined a three-phase relief plan.
In the first phase, solar lights, tarpaulins, and medicines are being distributed.

A 35-year-old man and his 10 year-old nephew were killed after a roof collapsed in a village in Punjab's Mansa district
A major mishap was averted after a two-storey building collapsed in the crowded Chaura Bazaar area of the city. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident. According to locals, the structure had been in a dilapidated condition for a long time, and no family was residing in it. Continuous rainfall over the past few days is believed to have triggered the collapse. As a precautionary measure, power supply in the area was immediately cut off to avoid any electrical hazards.
Authorities have cordoned off the site, and officials said further inspection of nearby buildings will be carried out to prevent similar incidents.
Dispelling rumours about the rising water level of the Ghaggar river in the Dera Bassi and Lalru areas, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal said the situation is fully under control and there is no need for people to panic.
She said the Alamgir and Tiwana embankments of the Ghaggar are strong, and administrative teams are continuously monitoring the situation to ensure immediate action, if required.
The DC informed that at two–three locations near Alamgir, additional attention was required, for which the Drainage Department has already been deployed to strengthen the embankments. She added that at present, the water level of the Ghaggar river in Dera Bassi and Lalru is well below the danger mark.
Referring to reports about the release of excess water from the Sukhna Headworks this morning, the DC clarified that it did not cause any surge, and the flow of water passed smoothly.
Accompanying the Deputy Commissioner during the visit were Dera Bassi SDM Amit Gupta, Executive Engineer, Drainage, Khushwinder Singh, and Dera Bassi Tehsildar Sumeet Singh Dhillon. The DC also interacted with nearby farmers and assured them that their concerns would be addressed promptly.

Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Agrawal has announced that due to continuous rainfall over the past six hours, several parts of the city are facing waterlogging, and in some areas, there has been a disruption in the power supply. He assured residents that there is no need to panic, as administrative teams from all departments are already deployed and efforts are underway to restore normalcy at the earliest.

Several villages in Sanaur and Kanoor in Patiala districts have been affected after water level rose in Ghaggar river. Fields and houses near the river were inundated leaving people stranded and helpless.

Punjab Chief Secretary today visited the flood-affected areas of Ajnala and Ramdas in Amritsar district. During this, he also reviewed the arrangements made at the relief center set up at villages. Meanwhile he assured that the Punjab government is committed towards its people and all the losses caused by torrential rains will be compensated by the government.
Due to the continuously rising water level in the Beas River caused by incessant rainfall in the upper hilly areas, the district administration on Sunday has issued an alert, urging people to move to safe locations immediately.
Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal stated that due to persist heavy rainfall, the water level in the Beas River has reached 2.35 lakh cusecs, and people residing in low-lying areas should immediately relocate to safer places. He also mentioned that the Meteorological department has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Kapurthala district. Additionally, the water level in the Beas River has been rising due to heavy rainfall since last night.
The DC emphasized that protecting human lives is the administration’s top priority, and therefore, people in the affected areas should move to safer locations. He added that teams from the Army and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are continuously evacuating people to safety. He further appealed to the public to contact the district administration’s helpline numbers immediately for any kind of assistance. Agitated flood affected victims in sheer despair, slammed the state government for its inefficiency to mitigate the damage caused by torrential rains. The flood-affected victims remembered SAD patron Prakash Singh Badal during these difficult times.
The continuous rainfall has inundated parts of Ajnala with water flowing into the villages of Raja Sansi. Meanwhile the leaders of SGPC and SAD are engaged and relief work, delivering food items and rations for victims in flood-affected areas.

Rising water levels in the Ghaggar have raised concerns in Patiala district, prompting the local administration to issue an advisory urging residents to remain alert and move to safer areas.
Punjab floods: Floods have now impacted nine districts of Punjab — Fazilka, Ferozepur, Kapurthala, Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Moga, Gurdaspur, and Barnala. According to official figures, as many as 1,312 villages have been affected so far.
With heavy rainfall lashing Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, and Haryana, the authorities have issued a red alert. Officials warn that if intense rains continue in the hills, rivers like the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej could swell further, causing more devastation.
For relief operations, the government has deployed 11 NDRF teams, while the Army is active in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar.
Relief efforts have also seen support from the entertainment industry. Punjabi singer-actor Sunanda Sharma reached Nanakpura village in Ajnala on a tractor, distributing ration and fodder for cattle. Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has expressed concern over the worsening flood situation in Punjab.
Meanwhile, in Ghonewala, Amritsar, the breach of the Dhussi embankment has submerged a 15-km stretch, with floodwaters reaching up to Ajnala town. Authorities remain on high alert, especially as Amritsar airport lies just 10 km from Ajnala.
