Boxing Day 2022: Know history and significance
Boxing Day 2022: Every year on December 26th, a few countries, mostly those historically associated with the United Kingdom and some European countries, observe Boxing Day. Boxing Day is celebrated just one day after Christmas.
The Irish and Catalan regions of Spain observe Saint Stephen's Day, which has religious significance. When December 26 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is designated as a holiday.
Boxing Day History:
Traditionally, alms were distributed to those in need on Boxing Day. Employees who were required to serve their masters on Christmas Day but allowed to see their families the next day received boxes from their employers containing gifts, bonuses, and leftover food.
After beginning as a British tradition, it has been recognised as an official bank or public holiday in other countries since 1871.

Boxing Day Significance:
Christmas Day has evolved into a shopping spree in the countries where it is observed today. It is very similar to Black Friday in the United States. The day also attracts a record number of tourists to England, who take advantage of the lower prices.
Another Boxing Day tradition is for many people in rural areas to go fox-hunting, which is frequently followed or preceded by a warm beverage at the local tavern.
St Stephen's Day (December 26) is also the feast day of St Stephen, the patron saint of horses. Several sporting events, including horse races and rugby, are part of the St Stephen's Day and Boxing Day celebrations.
Why is it called Boxing Day?
The act of giving money, food, or other gifts to those in need on the day after Christmas is referred to as Christmas boxes. As a result, the holiday is known as Boxing Day.
Another theory holds that it was a day off for wealthy servants and that their masters gave them a special Christmas box. On Boxing Day, the servants' families would also receive a Christmas box.
Boxing Day is traditionally spent with family and friends, especially those who cannot attend Christmas Day.
