Air India plane crash: From lunch to chaos: Medical college hostel canteen wrecked in crash
Air India plane crash: A major aviation tragedy was reported on Thursday afternoon when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London crashed minutes after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. In a devastating turn of events, the aircraft plunged into the resident doctors’ hostel at BJ Medical College, located within the Civil Hospital complex. The collision caused extensive structural damage, ignited multiple fires, and sent shockwaves through the city.
Eyewitness visuals from the scene showed the rear end of the fuselage lodged atop the top floor of the doctors’ hostel. Other images captured debris from the plane’s rear wheels embedded into the hostel wall, while smoke and scattered wreckage filled the area. Inside the building, parts of the canteen were visibly damaged, with lunch meals still laid out on tables, underscoring the suddenness of the crash.
Another portion of the aircraft's fuselage reportedly landed in an open space near the hostel, triggering a fire that scorched nearby trees. The impact and subsequent fire also ravaged the kitchen area of the hostel, with firefighters seen actively engaged in rescue and fire-dousing operations throughout the affected zone.
The crash scene drew a large crowd, with people gathering around the building as emergency teams and firefighters worked to control flames and search for survivors. Officials have yet to confirm the number of casualties or injured individuals, but rescue efforts are ongoing.
Authorities are expected to release a preliminary report soon as investigations begin into what led to the fatal crash of a flight that had just started its international journey.
