Chandigarh witnesses heavy rainfall; water enters PGI, two-wheelers stranded on roads; Sukhna water above danger mark
PTC Web Desk: Chandigarh witnessed sudden heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon, bringing life in the city to a standstill. Within minutes, several roads were waterlogged, leaving commuters stranded and causing widespread traffic chaos. Two-wheelers broke down in the middle of the streets, while traffic jams were reported at multiple locations. Waterlogging was reported inside the PGI, with rainwater entering the Emergency Block and APC area. Roads outside the hospital were also submerged under several feet of water, causing major inconvenience to patients and commuters.
Rainwater also entered the hospital’s canteen and Nehru Hospital complex, making it extremely difficult for patients and their attendants to move around. Residents in other areas also struggled to cross waterlogged stretches. At Sector 27 roundabout, water accumulation disrupted traffic, though on-duty police officials worked to ease congestion.
Office-goers returning home faced a double blow of heavy jams and flooded roads. Vehicles were seen stranded in knee-deep water across several parts of the city.
According to the Meteorological Department, similar conditions may persist for the next three days. Rain has been forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, while showers are also expected on Friday. Commuters have been advised to remain cautious and plan their travel accordingly.
Sukhna water above danger mark
With Chandigarh and its surrounding areas witnessing heavy rainfall, the water level in Sukhna Lake rose above the danger mark of 1,163 feet. The UT administration was forced to open two flood gates of the lake to release excess water.
According to officials, the first gate was opened around 3.45 pm, followed by the second at approximately 5.15 pm. The release of water through the two gates has significantly increased the flow in Sukhna choe. As a precautionary measure, the administration has tightened security around the area and restricted public movement near the choe.
Continuous monitoring of Sukhna Lake is underway to prevent any untoward incident. Notably, this is the fifth time this season that flood gates have been opened at Sukhna Lake.
