Covid: Omicron subvariant BF.7 behind surge in China; 3 cases in India so far

New Delhi, December 21: Covid threat is again looming large over the nation following a deadly outbreak in China where the virus had originated about two years ago. Health experts across the globe have been urging people to follow Covid protocols.

At the same time, it has surfaced that three cases of Omicron subvariant (BF.7) which is stated to be behind China's current surge of Covid cases, have been detected in India so far.



Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre had detected the first case of Omicron subvariant (BF.7) in India. While two cases of this variant have been reported from Gujarat, one has surfaced from Odisha so far.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday also held a review meeting, wherein experts said there was no overall increase in Covid caseload as of now, but they should continue to keep a surveillance over emerging variants of Covid.

As per information, several cities in China are currently battling highly transmissible Omicron strain, mostly BF.7. It has spread to Beijing and leading to increased cases everyday.

Omicron subvariant (BF.7) 

Omicron subvariant (BF.7) Omicron subvariant (BF.7) is a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant BA.5. It is highly transmissible and has strongest infection ability. The incubation period of this virus is shorter compared to the previous ones. It can even re-infect those who have been vaccinated against the virus.

So far, it has been detected in several countries. Among them are  US, UK and European nations such as Belgium, Germany, France and Denmark.
