Farmers' protest: Vegetable prices likely to rise in Delhi as march disrupts supply chain

Farmers' protest: Vegetable prices in Delhi are likely to increase as farmers' protests disrupt supply chains, according to a trader at Ghazipur Mandi, where the protests are on their fifth day.

A trader reported a Rs 4 increase in carrot prices over the previous 15 days due to supply issues in Punjab. He expressed concern that additional disruptions caused by the ongoing protests would result in price increases for other vegetables as well.

The vegetable trader at Ghazipur mandi stated, "The price of carrots has increased by Rs 4 in the last 15 days after supply from Punjab was disrupted due to farmers' protest. This could raise the price of vegetables. This issue between farmers and the government should be resolved soon."

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have issued a "Delhi Chalo" call to the BJP-led Centre to meet their demands. Farmers from Punjab began marching to the national capital on Tuesday but were stopped by security at the Shambhu and Khanauri border crossings between Punjab and Haryana.

The protesting farmers have been camped at border crossings since the March began on Tuesday, February 13.

However, another market trader expressed a more optimistic outlook, stating that there has been no immediate impact on vegetable prices.

Speaking about the potential impact on vegetable prices due to road closures caused by ongoing farmer protests, another vegetable trader in Delhi's Ghazipur Mandi stated, "There is no impact on vegetable prices currently. If the protests continue and there are more roadblocks, the supply of vegetables from Uttar Pradesh, Ganganagar, Pune, and other places may be disrupted, potentially leading to a price increase for some vegetables."

As the protests entered their fifth day on Saturday, security forces stationed at the Shambhu Border continued to ward off agitated farmers attempting to enter the national capital.

Hundreds of farmers and journalists have been injured as protestors clashed with police repeatedly in an attempt to cut through the multi-layered barricades.

A third round of talks with the central government ended in a stalemate on Thursday, amid a standoff between protesters and security personnel on the Punjab-Haryana border. Another round of talks will take place on Sunday.
