According to the police, the accident took place when a massive boulder broke loose from a hillside and struck the car. The vehicle plunged into a 500-metre deep gorge. Local residents reported the matter to the authorities  and rescue operations continued until around 2 am to recover the bodies.

The deceased have been identified as Rajesh Kumar (40), his wife Hanso (36), daughter Aarti (17), and son Deepak (15) — all residents of Bulwas Jungra and Rakesh Kumar (44) and driver Hempal (37).

Rajesh Kumar’s children were studying in Banikhet, Chamba. They were returning home after school holidays to celebrate Raksha Bandhan when the accident occurred around 9.20 pm, just short of their home.

Along with his sister, brother-in-law, niece, and nephew, the victims included another villager who had taken a lift. The ill-fated vehicle, a Swift bearing registration number HP44-4246, was on its way to drop the family home when the boulder struck.
