'Papa killed mummy': Son claims his mother beaten up, set ablaze over Rs 36 lakh dowry in Uttar Pradesh
PTC News Desk: A woman in Greater Noida died after being set ablaze by her husband and in-laws over a dowry dispute. Her husband, Vipin, has been arrested as the prime accused.
Police have booked four family members — the husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and brother-in-law. The incident came to light on Thursday night when the victim, Nikki, who had been married to Vipin from Sirsa since 2016, was admitted to Greater Noida’s Fortis Hospital with severe burn injuries. She was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for advanced treatment but died en route. After the post-mortem, her body was handed over to the family.
According to a complaint filed by Nikki’s elder sister, Kanchan, the victim was first beaten unconscious by her husband and then set on fire using an inflammable substance. Kanchan alleged that although the family had given a branded SUV and other valuables during the wedding, Nikki’s in-laws continued to demand additional dowry.
"After marriage, they demanded Rs 35 lakh. We even gave them another car, but their demands and harassment continued unabated," Kanchan said.
Kanchan claimed she was present at the spot but could not save her sister. Both sisters were married in 2016 to the same family. Neighbours helped take Nikki to the hospital, where she succumbed during treatment.
A shocking development emerged when a video of Nikki’s young child surfaced on social media, in which the boy can be heard saying, “Papa killed Mummy by burning her with a lighter.” The clip has gone viral, sparking widespread outrage.
Victim’s uncle, Raj Singh, revealed that despite multiple complaints and panchayat-led compromises in the past, the harassment continued. “Both sisters faced regular beatings. None of the compromises made any difference,” he said.
Following the complaint, police have booked Vipin (husband), Rohit (brother-in-law), Daya (mother-in-law), and Satveer (father-in-law).
