Uttarakhand rains: 52 dead, 37 injured as heavy downpour continues to wreak havoc

Uttarakhand rains: At least 52 people died and around 37 have been injured so far during the monsoon amid heavy rains in Uttarakhand that triggered landslides and flash floods in several places, according to official data.

“Due to the disaster caused by heavy monsoon rains in Uttarakhand, the state has suffered a loss of about Rs 650 crore so far, which may increase in the coming days. 52 people have been killed, 37 injured, and 19 missing in different accidents due to rain-related disasters,” the State Disaster Management Department says.

“After the end of the monsoon, an immediate report will be prepared and sent to the Central Government so that relief works can be completed quickly after the disaster," the department added.

Meanwhile, on the Chief Minister's orders, the SDRF and NDRF have been deployed at the required locations. They also stated that two helicopters have been maintained on standby for disaster-stricken areas.

Earlier, five pilgrims were killed after their car was buried under the debris of a landslide at Tarsali in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district's Chowki Phata, police said on Saturday.

The victims, including one from Gujarat, were on their way to Kedarnath when the incident occurred on Thursday evening, according to officials.

According to officials, the accident also resulted in the closure of the Guptkashi-Gaurikund highway leading to Kedarnath Dham for traffic on Friday, with approximately 60 metres of the road extensively damaged and swept away. For the past few days, many districts in the state, including Rudraprayag, have experienced nonstop rain.
