MCD polls: SAD pledges support to party committing release of Bandi Singhs

New Delhi, November 24: In the upcoming MCD elections, the Shiromani Akali Dal will throw its weight behind the party pledging to work tirelessly for the release of Bandi Singhs, its Delhi chief Paramjit Singh Sarna announced on Thursday.

“After deliberations at our SAD meeting Wednesday, we have decided to keep the Bandi Singhs over and above the immediate power game of electoral politics,” Sarna added. “Our party will stand beside those who promise to work with utmost commitment for the release of Bandi Singhs.”

Sarna noted that the entire Sikh community watched as all seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case were released this year after serving 30 years in prison, six of them earlier this month.

“If the state power yielded before Tamil sentiments, there’s no reason it shouldn't before Sikh sentiments about the Bandi Singhs. We need to fine-tune our strategy in order to secure honourable release of Sikh prisoners. We need to make everybody realize how valuable our support is. If anyone wants it, then commit to securing the release of Bandi Singhs,” he added.

He noted that Delhi has the largest population of Sikhs in any Indian city.

"We will appeal to Sikh voters in Delhi to cast their valuable vote for those who formally declare to work for the Bandi Singhs' cause," Sarna said.
