Punjab family falls critically ill in Germany after eating 'poisonous' panjeeri; survivor alleges murder attempt by employee
PTC News Desk: In a strange yet tragic turn of events, an Indian family in Germany
fell criticlly ill after allegedly consuming panjeeri with highly toxic chemical.
Rachna Kapoor, 49 claimed that thallium in very high quantity was mixed in the sweet that she had prepared to celebrate birth of her granddaughter in Germany. She has accused her domestic help of mixing poison in the panjiri in an attempt of mass murder.
Doctors have confirmed that the sudden illness was caused by thallium poisoning and not due to any natural disease.
Within days of consuming it, several family members fell critically ill. Kapoor's daughter, advocate Ranjita Batra, her mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law are currently in the ICU on ventilators at a hospital in Hamburg.
Kapoor was airlifted to India from Germany after she fell critically ill. Initially she was admitted to Medanta Hospital and later shifted to Ganga Ram Hospital.
Medical reports from Germany showed that the newborn baby had 47.0 units of thallium in her blood, which is much higher than the normal level of 0.2 units. Ranjita Batra’s thallium level was found to be extremely high at 9,984.0. Doctors said thallium is a very dangerous poison that damages the body from inside and is often difficult to detect in early tests.
Calling the incident an “attempted mass murder,” Kapoor said all affected family members had to be put on ventilator support within five days of eating the panjeeri. She also claimed that her newborn granddaughter, who was breastfed for just one day, was also affected, as traces of thallium were found in her body.
Rachna Kappor had said that the effect of the poison was so extreme that her daughter's nerves have been severely damaged and kidneys are also affected as she had consumed maximum panjeeri.
