Ravi floods border villages in Ajnala, DC urges residents to move to safer locations

Several border villages in Ajnala, Amritsar district, have been inundated after a breach in Dhussi embankment allowed swollen waters of the Ravi to enter residential areas. The situation has forced residents to leave their homes and move to safer places.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sakshi Sahni, along with senior officials from the district administration and police, visited the affected sites to oversee relief operations. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed, while additional support from the Army has been placed on alert.

Speaking to the media, DC Sahni said while the water level is expected to recede gradually, the immediate threat of flooding in homes remains high. She appealed to residents not to delay and to shift promptly to designated safe locations. “Rescue and relief teams have been on the ground since morning, ensuring all possible assistance,” she said.

The DC further informed that an additional NDRF team from Bathinda is on its way, and the Army has been kept in readiness for any emergency response. She assured that the administration is receiving real-time updates about stranded individuals, and rescue operations are being carried out jointly by the police, BSF, and other agencies.

The administration has emphasised that saving lives is the top priority and urged people not to put themselves at risk. Residents have been advised to cooperate with authorities and relocate to safer shelters along with their families.

Punjab records coldest August 26 in 55 years as day temperature drops to 27°C; more rain expected

Continuous rainfall has brought a sharp dip in temperatures across Punjab, breaking a 55-year-old weather record. On August 26, the state recorded a daytime temperature of around 27°C, the lowest ever for this date in over five decades.

According to the Punjab Agricultural University’s Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall over the past few days has significantly reduced the mercury level. Weather experts confirmed that this is the coldest August 26 recorded in 55 years.

On Sunday, the Meteorological Department had also issued red and orange alerts for several regions of Punjab, warning residents of intense rain and potential flooding.

Dr. Pavneet Kaur from the university’s weather department stated that the rainy spell is likely to continue in the coming days. “For the next three to four days, there are chances of rainfall in various parts of the state, and in some areas, a yellow alert has been issued,” she added.

Authorities have advised people to remain cautious and take necessary precautions during the ongoing wet spell.

In Bathinda, farmers suffer heavy losses to their cotton crop

PTC Web Desk:  Punjab is reeling under severe flood conditions after heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh pushed water levels up in major dams and rivers. With Ranjit Sagar Dam and Bhakra Dam releasing excess water, the Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas rivers are swelling, inundating several areas across the state.

As a precautionary measure, schools in Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Pathankot, and Gurdaspur districts, along with Amritsar’s Ajnala and Rayya blocks, were closed on Monday. In Fazilka, 20 flood-hit villages have seen schools shut indefinitely.

The release of water from Ranjit Sagar Dam has worsened the situation in Pathankot, while seven villages in Gurdsapur’s Makora Pattan have been cut off. Meanwhile, the Bhakra Dam’s outflow is raising Sutlej’s water level, impacting areas in Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, and Fazilka through the Harike headworks.

The situation remains grim as the Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall across nine districts—Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala. A yellow alert is in effect across the remaining districts. Experts predict normal conditions on Wednesday, but from August 29, a fresh western disturbance may bring renewed rainfall to Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar.

On Monday, Amritsar recorded 20.6 mm rainfall, Ludhiana 7.2 mm, Pathankot 37 mm, Ferozepur 55.5 mm, Hoshiarpur 20 mm, Rupnagar 5.5 mm, and Mohali 10.5 mm. Despite the downpour, temperatures rose by 1.2°C but remained 2.4°C below normal. Maximum temperatures stood at 30.5°C in Mohali, 25.4°C in Amritsar, 25°C in Ludhiana, 30°C in Patiala, 24°C in Pathankot, and 28.5°C in Bathinda.

In Sultanpur Lodhi (Kapurthala), a breach in the Dhusi embankment of the Beas at Ahli Kalan village raised fears among farmers, threatening thousands of acres of standing crops.

In Fazilka’s border belt along Pakistan, rising Sutlej levels prompted the authorities to close schools for three days and urge residents to move to safer locations. Police teams have been deployed on bridges to restrict movement over the river.

In Dinanagar (Gurdaspur), the Dhusi embankment breached at two points near Ugra village, leaving residents in distress. Local administration has advised people to shift to higher ground.

In Amritsar’s Ajnala area, the roof of a house collapsed in Saran village, injuring three family members who were asleep inside.
