Punjab: Union Minister Som Prakash demands creation of Phagwara as new district

Days after Punjab Cabinet Ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa demanded the creation of Batala as a new district, the Union Minister Som Prakash on Wednesday asked the state government to consider creating Phagwara as a new district. In a letter issued to Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Som Prakash wrote: "It has been reported in the media that the Punjab Government is considering to make Batala a district." Phagwara is presently a part of Kapurthala district but is separated from the main district by Jalandhar district i.e. it is not contiguous with the main district," he added. "It has been a long-standing demand for granting district status to Phagwara by including Phillaur, Goraya, and Behrampur," he wrote further, adding that a lot of requests were made to this effect which were pending consideration. Farmers try to gherao Union minister Som Parkash in Hoshiarpur - Hindustan Times "Keeping in view the emerging needs from an administrative point of view and demand of the general public, it is expedient that the creation of a new district of Phagwara is announced in order to give justice to the aspiration of the people," Som Prakash wrote. "I am to request your good self to kindly consider this demand of the people of Phagwara and issue necessary direction to this effect at the earliest," he concluded. -PTC News
