Abide by Ramzan ceasefire policy: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said that the government will “abide” by the Ramzan ceasefire policy laid out by the Home Ministry. She added that despite provocations, there will be ceasefire during Ramzan.
“I think HM was heard announcing the policy. We should honour the policy. We shall abide by everything that has been announced,” Sitharaman said.
Upon asking if India will take Pakistan Army chief general Qamar Javed Bajwa peace comment seriously, she said: “Any comment on wanting peace will definitely be taken seriously.”
On April 16, the Centre announced a conditional ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir and asked the security forces to not launch operations during the holy month of Ramzan.
The Ministry of Home Affairs said that the decision was taken to ensure that peace-loving Muslims could observe Ramzan in a peaceful environment.
“I wholeheartedly welcome the Ramadan ceasefire & would like to thank @narendramodi ji & @rajnathsingh ji for their personal intervention. My gratitude also to the leaders & parties who participated in the All Party Meeting & helped build consensus towards this announcement,” Jammu and Kashmir chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti tweeted.
Terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba was quick to reject the Centre’s proposal and said that it will target Indian security establishment during Ramzan.
