PTC News Desk: A tsunami warning has been issued after five massive earthquakes struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia’s far east, on Sunday, according to the US National Tsunami Warning Center. The earthquakes occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) initially recorded the earthquake as a magnitude 6.7. However, both the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the US Geological Survey (USGS) later revised the magnitude to 7.4.

While the other quakes did not lead to any tsunami alerts, the 7.4 magnitude quake—striking at 08:49 GMT—prompted the USGS to issue a warning. It stated that "hazardous tsunami waves are possible" within a 300-kilometre (186-mile) radius of the epicenter, located in the Pacific Ocean near the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported on Sunday, citing local emergency services, that waves of up to 60 cm could reach the sparsely populated Aleutsky District on the Commander Islands.

Waves reaching up to 40 cm are expected to impact the Ust-Kamchatsky area in eastern Kamchatka. Meanwhile, the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky urban district—the most densely populated region in the southeastern part of the peninsula and location of the regional capital—may also be affected.
