Ottawa, June 28: Canada's Ministry of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship has made a significant move to attract highly skilled workers from the United States by creating a new open work-permit stream. The Canadian Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, announced that the government will welcome 10,000 American H-1B visa holders to work in Canada.

In addition to providing work opportunities for H-1B visa holders, the program will also extend study or work permits to their family members. The Ministry's official release stated that many workers in the high-tech industry are employed by companies with operations in both Canada and the US, and those holding H-1B specialty occupation visas in the US can now apply to work in Canada starting from July 16, 2023.

Under this new decision, approved applicants will receive an open work permit that can be valid for up to three years. This permit will allow them to work for any employer in Canada. Furthermore, the spouses and dependents of H-1B visa holders will also be eligible to apply for a temporary resident visa, along with a work or study permit, as required.

While specific details regarding the qualification criteria and the number of individuals to be admitted to this stream have not been provided, CBC News reported that the Canadian government plans to create an immigration stream for highly talented individuals who wish to work for tech companies in Canada, regardless of whether they have a job offer or not. This initiative is expected to be developed by the end of this year.

H-1B visas have been crucial in allowing foreign nationals to temporarily work in specialized occupations, particularly in the technology sector, in the United States. However, due to the economic impact of the pandemic, many tech companies have downsized their workforce, leaving numerous H-1B visa holders searching for new job opportunities.

Canada's decision to welcome H-1B visa holders and their families is a significant step in attracting highly skilled professionals and providing them with new avenues for employment and growth. This move not only benefits the individuals seeking work opportunities but also strengthens Canada's position as a destination for tech talent and innovation.
