Kathmandu (Nepal), October 6: At least 16 people died and several were injured in a bus accident in the Bara District of Southern Nepal along the East-West highway on Thursday.
The accident reportedly took place in the wee hours when the bus was en route to Pathlaiya of Bara from Narayangadh of Chitwan and crashed near Tin number pul along East-West Highway. Over two dozen people were injured in the accident, according to local police officials.
"12 succumbed to injuries during treatment at the Hetauda Hospital in Makwanpur District while two died in Chure Hill Hospital and one each at Makwanpur Hospital and Chitwan. An additional 24 people have been injured and are undergoing treatment" Inspector Balaram Shrestha of the Makawanpur District Police Office informed.
The bus was carrying people returning from the Dashain festival.
According to local officials, the bus was overloaded when it arrived and eventually slid off the bridge into the river.
Road accidents are common in Nepal during festivals such as Dashain when people flock to the country in huge numbers.
Poor road conditions, heavy vehicles, and driver error have all contributed to an increase in fatalities in the Himalayan region.
