Major breach reported in Bhakra Canal

A large breach occurred in the Bhakra Canal near Gurdwara Shri Bunga Sahib, close to Kiratpur Sahib, after the adjoining embankment road collapsed into the canal, creating a significant opening.

Fortunately, the breach developed on the side facing agricultural fields. Officials said if it had occurred on the opposite side, the damage could have been far more severe. The affected embankment road is an important route that connects several villages in the area.

Villagers said the embankment began sinking early in the morning, after which they immediately informed the canal department and local administration. Officials inspected the site in the morning, but as the day progressed, the breach widened.

In response, local residents began filling the gap with tractor-trolleys of soil, while awaiting further instructions from the administration. Authorities have indicated that sandbags will be used to seal the breach.

Although the morning rainfall has subsided, villagers remain concerned that if urgent repairs are not carried out, the breach could expand further, putting nearby areas at risk.

Water level in Ghaggar under control, do not pay heed to rumours: DC Komal Mittal

Dispelling rumours about the rising water level of the Ghaggar river in the Dera Bassi and Lalru areas, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal said the situation is fully under control and there is no need for people to panic.

She said the Alamgir and Tiwana embankments of the Ghaggar are strong, and administrative teams are continuously monitoring the situation to ensure immediate action, if required.

Referring to reports about the release of excess water from the Sukhna Headworks this morning, the DC clarified that it did not cause any surge, and the flow of water passed smoothly.

Accompanying the Deputy Commissioner during the visit were Dera Bassi SDM Amit Gupta, Executive Engineer, Drainage, Khushwinder Singh, and Dera Bassi Tehsildar Sumeet Singh Dhillon. The DC also interacted with nearby farmers and assured them that their concerns would be addressed promptly.

Punjab floods: Floods have now impacted nine districts of Punjab — Fazilka, Ferozepur, Kapurthala, Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Moga, Gurdaspur, and Barnala. According to official figures, as many as 1,312 villages have been affected so far.

With heavy rainfall lashing Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, and Haryana, the authorities have issued a red alert. Officials warn that if intense rains continue in the hills, rivers like the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej could swell further, causing more devastation.

For relief operations, the government has deployed 11 NDRF teams, while the Army is active in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar.

Relief efforts have also seen support from the entertainment industry. Punjabi singer-actor Sunanda Sharma reached Nanakpura village in Ajnala on a tractor, distributing ration and fodder for cattle. Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has expressed concern over the worsening flood situation in Punjab.

Meanwhile, in Ghonewala, Amritsar, the breach of the Dhussi embankment has submerged a 15-km stretch, with floodwaters reaching up to Ajnala town. Authorities remain on high alert, especially as Amritsar airport lies just 10 km from Ajnala.
