Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tests Covid positive, has 'mild symptoms'

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday he had tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently under home quarantine with "mild symptoms" of coronavirus.
"I have tested positive for Corona today with mild symptoms. I am under home quarantine. I request everyone who have recently come in my contact to isolate themselves and get tested," tweeted the Defence Minister. India reported 1,79,723 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the daily positivity rate in the country to 13.29 per cent, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday. A total of 4,033 cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus have been reported so far. Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases (1,216), followed by Rajasthan (529) and Delhi (513). About 1,552 patients infected with the new variant have recovered. The ministry further said the active Covid-19 caseload in the country currently  stands at 7,23,619, which accounts for 2.03 per cent of the country's total number of coronavirus cases. The weekly positivity rate currently is at 7.29 per cent, while the daily positivity rate stands at 13.29 per cent. The total cases of Covid-19 in the country have risen to 35,528,004. Also read | Timeline of PM Narendra Modi’s ‘security lapse’; read details Meanwhile, as India witnesses a steep surge in Covid-19 cases and its Omicron variant, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Lav Aggarwal emphasised home isolation to deal with it and advised people to rely on only authentic sources of information and avoid creating a panic situation as the infection caused by Omicron variant is mild. Addressing a virtual meeting, Aggarwal said, "One must only trust the authentic source of information, not any information that might create panic. We should become more responsible collectively." "Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) of COVID-19 infection is 70 times more transmissible in nature; however, it is a milder infection that requires home isolation at large and lesser hospitalisation," he said. The Joint Secretary further informed that the Government of India stresses home isolation for dealing with the Omicron variant and they have reduced its time from 10 days to seven days. -PTC News
