INX Media Case: SC Rejects P Chidambaram's Pre-Arrest Bail Request

INX Media case: Supreme Court on Thursday refused to grant protection to Congress leader P Chidambaram following the arrest by the Enforcement Directorate over corruption allegations. Supreme Court rejected an appeal of P Chidambaram against the Delhi High Court’s order rejecting his anticipatory bail plea in a case being probed by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in INX Media case.

Supreme Court said, “Granting anticipatory bail at the initial stage may frustrate the investigation. It’s not a fit case to grant anticipatory bail. Economic offenses stand at the different footing and it has to be dealt with a different approach.” Likewise, the Supreme Court said that P Chidambaram can move regular bail application before the trial court, for regular bail.

Meanwhile, Congress leader P Chidambaram has withdrawn his appeal from the Court challenging trial court’s order of sending him to CBI custody following the anticipatory bail plea being rejected from the Top court.

As per reports, the allegations against P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram are based on the information from Peter Mukerjea and Indrani Mukerjea, who are currently jailed in connection with the murder of Indrani’s daughter Sheena Bora. Peter Mukherjea and Indrani were the co-founders of INX Media. Chidambaram is accused of approving the FIPB funds in 2007, while he was the Finance Minister of India.
