Mumbai (Maharashtra), September 20: Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), one of the world's busiest single runway airports, broke its own single-day record with 1,30,374 passengers on September 17, 2022, the highest since the pandemic, according to airport officials.

The increase in traffic at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is due to newer destinations, increased flight movements, and an increase in airline capacity. "Close to 95,080 passengers travelled through Terminal 2 (T2) and 35,294 were witnessed travelling through Terminal 1 (T1) with 839 total flight movements on this day," a statement released by CSMIA read. On domestic routes, IndiGo Vistara and Go First carried the most passengers. IndiGo, Air India, and Emirates were among the top three international carriers. The top three domestic destinations were Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai, while Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Singapore remained the top three international routes with the most air traffic.

Adding to the weekend rush, on September 18, 2022, CSMIA saw over 1.3 lakh passengers, with approximately 98,000+ pax travelling domestically and over 32,000 pax travelling on international routes.

Domestic traffic increased by 5% to 1.02 crore in August 2022, according to rating agency Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency of India Limited (ICRA), showing that the aviation industry is on the mend with normalcy in flight operations. A surprise drill was also conducted at the Mumbai airport on Saturday, demonstrating that the alertness levels of the staff and authorities were at the desired level, according to a statement from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

The mock drill was held at Terminal 2 (T2), where the airport received a bomb threat during the afternoon hours. As a surprise drill, it put not only the airport's disaster response system to the test, but also its calm coordination to avert the situation.
