All India Muslim Law Board holds emergency meeting to discuss uniform civil code following PM Modi's remarks

New Delhi, June 28: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board conducted an urgent meeting to discuss the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the nation, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent endorsement of the concept. PM Modi, during a speech in Bhopal, emphasized the importance of UCC, highlighting that equal rights for all citizens are enshrined in the Constitution.

In his address, PM Modi stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chosen not to engage in appeasement or vote bank politics. He accused the opposition of exploiting the UCC issue to mislead and provoke the Muslim community.

The Uniform Civil Code pertains to a comprehensive set of laws that are applicable to all citizens, superseding religion-based personal laws concerning inheritance, adoption, and succession.

The meeting of the Muslim Law Board was conducted virtually and lasted approximately three hours. The attendees discussed the legal aspects of the UCC and analyzed PM Modi's statements.

Subsequently, the board decided to prepare a draft on the matter, taking into account the input provided by lawyers and experts. This draft will be submitted to the Law Commission for further consideration.

Last year in September, a private member's Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha, proposing the establishment of a panel to develop a Uniform Civil Code. This initiative faced significant resistance from opposition parties. Previous attempts to introduce similar bills in the Upper House were not pursued.

Earlier this month, the Law Commission initiated a fresh consultation process on the Uniform Civil Code, inviting perspectives from all stakeholders on this politically sensitive issue.
