Surveillance footage showed people walking on a wide, less crowded footpath near the Mannagudda junction in Mangaluru around 4 p.m. According to officials, a white Hyundai Eon driven by Kamalesh Baldev dangerously manoeuvred the car and hit five people on the footpath - two women and three girls.
The car came from behind and hit four people before running over a woman and hitting another woman who tried to flee as the car approached her, according to the footage. The accused rams the car and breaks a pole on the road, according to the video.
The accused driver hits the car, breaking a pole and dragging the woman for a few meters until she hits the divider.
The accused smashed the car into five people in six seconds, killing one woman and injuring four others, including three girls, before speeding away. He parked his car in front of a car dealership and went home. According to officers, the man and his father proceeded to the police station.
Vehicles came to a halt, and people hurried to the scene to help the injured. After surviving the crash, one person managed to stand up but was limping. Two people who appeared to be critically injured were rushed to the hospital.
Roopashri, 23, was killed in the accident, and one woman and three girls were injured.
The police have opened an investigation under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including one for causing death by negligence.
