Major breakthrough in Chandigarh Sector 9 murder case: Punjab AGTF arrests two accused after encounter in Kaithal
Charanpreet killing: In a significant breakthrough in the sensational daylight murder of Charanpreet Singh, alias Chini Kubaheri, a property dealer, in Chandigarh Sector 9 on Wednesday afternoon, the Punjab Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) has arrested both accused involved in the killing after an encounter in Kaithal, Haryana.
Acting swiftly on intelligence inputs, AGTF teams tracked down the suspects to Kaithal. The accused have been identified as Rajan alias Piyush Pahalwan, a resident of Ferozepur, and Pritam Shah from Nawanshahr. Officials revealed that Rajan had recently entered India illegally via Nepal after returning from Malaysia.
During the operation, the accused allegedly opened fire at the police in an attempt to escape. In retaliatory action, both suspects were injured and subsequently apprehended.
The police have recovered the motorcycle used in the crime, which was fitted with a fake number plate, along with the weapons used in the crime. Both accused have a history of criminal involvement, with multiple cases registered against them.
Investigators also confirmed that Charanpreet Singh himself had a criminal background, with several cases, including attempt to murder and violations under the Arms Act, registered against him in Mohali. Authorities are also probing his alleged links to gang networks and possible involvement in the drug trade.
Further investigation is underway to establish the full conspiracy and identify any additional accomplices.
Notably, 31-year-old Charanpreet Singh, alias Chini Kubaheri, was shot dead in a daring attack in Sector 9 market on Wednesday afternoon. The incident, which took place around 12.30 pm, sent shockwaves across the city due to its location in a high-security zone, close to key government establishments.
According to initial investigations and CCTV footage, the assailants had meticulously planned the attack. The helmet-clad shooters were waiting for Charanpreet outside a gym and opened fire as he exited the parking area in his SUV. As the vehicle slowed near a turn, the attackers fired nearly 12 rounds from both sides, leaving him critically injured.
Despite the presence of heavy traffic and security infrastructure in the area, the attackers managed to flee the scene, reportedly driving against traffic towards the Landran side. Charanpreet sustained multiple bullet injuries to the chest, abdomen and arm and later succumbed to his injuries.
Within hours of the incident, gangster Lucky Patial of the Davinder Bambiha gang claimed responsibility for the killing through a social media post. The murder is believed to be linked to ongoing gang rivalry, with allegations that the victim was acting as an informer for rival groups and had connections to previous criminal cases.
