Jammu and Kashmir: Avalanche warning issued for seven districts, check list

Kashmir, April 21: On Friday, the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) issued an avalanche warning for seven districts in the region, predicting that an avalanche with a low danger level is likely to occur above 2500 to 3200 metres above sea level over Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban, Baramulla, and Kupwara districts in the next 24 hours, and an avalanche with a medium danger level is likely to occur above 2800 metres over the Ganderbal district in the next 24 hours. The JKDMA has advised people living in these areas to take precautions and avoid venturing into the avalanche-prone areas until further notice.

"Avalanche with low danger level is likely to occur above 2500 to 3200 metres above sea level over Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban, Baramulla and Kupwara districts in the next 24 hours," the official statement said. "Avalanche with medium danger level is likely to occur above 2800 metres over the Ganderbal district in the next 24 hours," it added.

"People living in these areas are advised to take precautions and avoid venturing into the avalanche-prone areas till further orders," JKDMA said.

This warning comes after a deadly incident in February, when two foreign tourists were killed in an avalanche in Gulmarg. However, 19 stranded tourists from overseas and two local guides were rescued. Baramulla police stated that three teams, comprising 21 foreigners and two local guides, had gone to Affarwat Gulmarg for skiing and were trapped in Hapatkhud Kangdori.

On receiving information, Baramulla police mobilised joint rescue teams of JKP and the tourism department, who managed to rescue the people.

In a separate incident in February, personnel of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police rescued a man buried under a pile of snow after an avalanche in Kupwara.

The JKDMA has urged the public to remain vigilant and follow safety precautions while travelling in these avalanche-prone areas.
