ECI takes action against alleged poll code violations by PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi

PTC Web Desk: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated action regarding alleged Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) raised concerns regarding speeches that purportedly incited hatred and division along religious, caste, community, or linguistic lines.

Under Section 77 of the Representation of the People Act, the ECI has taken the initial step of holding the respective party presidents, JP Nadda for BJP and Mallikarjuna Kharge for INC, accountable for reigning in their star campaigners. Responses have been requested from both parties by 11 am on April 29.

The Election Commission stressed the primary responsibility of political parties in ensuring the conduct of their candidates and star campaigners. They highlighted the gravity of campaign speeches made by prominent figures, indicating the seriousness of the matter.

The BJP lodged a complaint against Rahul Gandhi, alleging false claims regarding poverty in the country and attempts to sow division based on language and region. Similarly , the Congress formally approached the ECI, seeking action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In their complaint, the Congress emphasised the need for zero tolerance towards allegations of corrupt practices and proposed the disqualification of candidates who seek to divide citizens based on class distinctions.

The Lok Sabha elections are currently underway, with the first phase already concluded on April 19. Subsequent phases are scheduled for April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1, with results on June 4.
